China, Japan made no progress over the drilling issue
(by Olivia Cohen)

China, Japan made no progress over the drilling issue
China and Japan failed to make progress in negotiations over the gas drilling issue that caused mass demonstrations in Chinese cities with the demand for Japan to stop drilling in disputed area.

The dispute, worst since 1972, evoked mass demonstrations in China over the past weeks in an attempt to block the drilling and urge Japan to stop bidding for the seat on the United Nations Security Council.

The demonstrations also criticized the way China was presented in Japanese textbooks and the way Japan depicted its own role in Chinese occupation.

A summit meeting between the leaders of two countries was held over the weekend but saw no progress in resolving the key issue between two countries that can damage their costly eonomic relations.

"Japan and China have never needed each other as much as they do today," Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said in a news conference after the meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao.
