China considers probes on textile curbs as bad idea
(by Roy Deng)

China considers probes on textile curbs as bad idea China will raise an official complaint about a probe started by the European Union to decide whether to impose limits on textile imports from China. Chinese government stated that such a move violates World Trade Organization rules and causes damage for textile industry of the country. The statement was released on the Web site of the Commerce Ministry of China, citing its spokesman Chong Quan.

``We hope the EU realizes the negative impact textile trade limits would have on our economic and trade relationship with them,’’ Chong said in the statement.

On Sunday, European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson said it started a probe on limiting imports of nine categories of Chinese textiles to protect producers in Europe.

However, Peter Mandelson remarked that the EU’s preference is not to impose sanctions which can put at risk friendly relations with Europe’s leading trade partners but to urge China to take voluntary action to restrain its exports.

The issue seems to be as acute in the US, where the administration recently launched a similar investigation but traders have started lawsuits demanding to impose curbs.
