Israel wary about Putin’s proposal of Middle East peace summit
(by Natali Novak)

Israel wary about Putin’s proposal of Middle East peace summit Israel strikes a warning note against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal of Middle East peace summit if it is an effort to ignore a "road map" peace plan, a senior Israeli official said on Wednesday.

"We are very wary but not against it in principle," the official said.

The warnings of Israel are quite surprising in the light of the fact that Russia is one the four sponsors of the Middle East peace "road map".

Under that plan, Palestinians are to dismantle militant groups while Israel should stop the growth of Jewish settlements.

Putin made the peace conference proposal in Cairo on Wednesday saying the other three members of the "Quartet" - the United States, the United Nations and the European Union - as well as "all the states concerned" would be invited to the summit in the autumn.

Israel expressed uncertain reaction on the proposal while Palestinian Deputy Prime Minister Nabil Shaath told Reuters: "We support the proposal totally."

Mr Putin is expected to clear up the matter with Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, and Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, duri his visits to Israel and the Palestinian later on Wednesday.
