Putin runs his mission through Middle East
(by Helen Snow)

Israel is going to strongly oppose the Russian President Vladimir Putin’s possible intention to sell arms to the Palestinians, an Israeli official said on Thursday as President Vladimir Putin arrived in Israel.
The news about military provision came from Khairi al-Aridi, Palestinian envoy to Moscow, who announced earlier this week that Putin is going to offer the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas 50 armoured vehicles during their meeting on Friday.
On Thursday, Mr. Putin met with Israeli President Moshe Katsav, and both leaders expressed willingness for further development of co-operation between the two nations. Mr. Putin is also expected to meet with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon later today.
On Wednesday Putin held talks with the Egyptian President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak, when he announced his proposal to arrange a Middle East peace summit in Moscow.
While the Palestinians supported Putin’s plan; the Israelis, as well as the US, stated this is not a right time for any international summits while the main task - Sharon’s Gaza withdrawal plan – has been not fulfilled yet.
According the so-called "road map" peace plan, a international conference should take place during its second stage. Still, at the moment both parties are far from the total fulfilment of the requirements for the first phase.
