China’s textile exports to Europe to be stemmed
(by Roy Deng)

China’s textile exports to Europe to be stemmed A surge in Chinese textile exports to Europe would be stemmed till July, China said after France claimed the exports harm its economy.

The increase in textile exports will be regulated in a moderate way, according to China’s Trade Minister Bo Xilai. Earlier the European Union said China’s surge in textile exports could harm the EU economy. The global textile import quota expired in January.

Mr. Bo met with his French counterpart Francois Loos last week. «We want to soften the shock wave that could provoke massive exports of Chinese apparel. We are doing what we can to prevent a sharp spike in order to achieve balanced trade,» Bo said.

Mr. Loos said he believed China would take necessary steps to prevent possible disruptions on the market.

China can face formal limits on its clothing exports after the EU executive commission agreed last Thursday to launch an investigation into Chinese exports to Europe in nine categories of clothing. The investigation was widely supported by such EU textile makers as France, Italy, Greece and Spain.

Last year, French exports to China were valued at 7.4 billion euros as compared with imports worth 17.7 billion euros.
