Voters to keep Labour on a shorter leash

Voters to keep Labour on a shorter leash

The UK elections showed that the voters are more conscious about the Labour Party with the Labours getting a slight majority in the House of Commons this time.

Labour won 353 of 630 of the 646 districts counted. The figure shows that Labour will control Parliament for the third straight term. The Conservatives received 195 seats and the Liberal Democrats 60.

The Labour Party showed poor performance as compared with the 2001 elections where Labour won 41% of the vote and 412 seats in Parliament. The Conservatives’ stake amounted to 32% and 166 seats, while the Liberal Democrats won 18% and 52 seats.

Labour lost voters mostly because of the Iraq campaign. The recent polls showed that the majority of British would prefer Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown to replace Mr. Blair as Prime Minister.

``The British people wanted the return of a Labour government but with a reduced majority. We have to respond to that sensibly and wisely and responsibly, make sure to focus on the things that matter to people: living standards, hospitals, schools and law and order,’’ said Blair.
