Western Iraq operation death toll grows The US-led operation in Western Iraq that has already taken about 75 lives near the border with Syria claimed another death as a US Marine was killed, according to the Department of Defense.

About 75 insurgents have been killed during the first day of the military operation launched by the US military forces in an attempt to soothe the uprising in the country that still faces contradictions after the elections.

The US Marine was killed on Monday in an operation in al-Qaim by ``enemy small arms fire,’’ according to the Department of Defense statement on the website.

This is not the first US marine victim killed in an operation launched to soothe the uprising in Iraq. On May 8, two marines were killed, according to the information provided by the department. One marine was killed in Qaim and another one in Ubaydi of Anbar province.
