A nomination of John Bolton to represent the US in the United Nations was sent to the full chamber without an endorsement amid the hottest battle over the Bush administration’s nominee who was known for harsh comments on the UN policy.
Mr. Bolton needs 51 votes to be confirmed, as the UN ambassador and some senior officials say he could muster the votes he needs to be approved.
Republicans continue to oppose the choice of George Bush showing the growing concern over the nominee who once said it would be nothing special if 10 storeys of the UN building simply vanish.
"No decision has been made, but I certainly wouldn’t rule it out," Sen. Christopher Dodd (D., Conn.) said after the vote.
The nomination is stil lin danger, some Democrats say, as the Republicans may use the tactics of filibuster to kick out the nomination.
Nevertheless, Mr. Bolton remains one of the most experienced diplomats to represent the US in the United Nations, officials say.
