(by Brigitta Zulfitzler)

EU plans to help poor by air The European Union said it seeks options to help poor with the involvement of air tax that is a voluntary move of all the nations sharing euro to fight the world’s poverty.

EU finance ministers agreed during the meeting to levy a new tax on airline tickets to aid the developing world. The EU will also be able to contribute 0.56% of EU gross domestic product by 2010.

"This will be a voluntary tax, but some member states are suggesting that it be made compulsory," said Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, who chaired the meeting.

The tax is voluntary so far but some of the European countries are ready to make it compulsory, including Germany and France. The plan was initially developed by that French President Jacques Chirac.

The details of the plan are expected to be revealed by finance ministers at a meeting om June 7.
