US puts more pressure on Chinese textile

The Bush administration imposed new restrictions on Chinese textile imports for the third time in a week. The US demands Beijing to shrink its textile and apparel exports to the world’s largest economy.
The US Commerce Department announced new restrictions on Chinese textile imports in four extra categories, such as combed-cotton yarn and certain knit shirts. Officials say they endeavour to protect US producers from the surge of cheap Chinese imports that may severely damage the US economy.
Now textile imports from China will be under control of the US government, officials said. The quotas are expected to come to force as soon as this month. The levels of the quotas will amount to 7.5% above the amount of imports of those products from China during the past 12 months, according to the Wall Street Journal.
China’s officials are angry with the step. "We strongly reject the new sanctions on Chinese textile export imposed by the U.S. government. The safeguard measures, including those imposed on the three categories last week, are not in line with the free trade principles of WTO," said Gao Yong, deputy chairman of the China National Textile & Apparel Council.
Some American retailers also called the step "outrageous and unjustified."
